Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer.

Carmen Mountain Whitetail deer were first identified by Goldman and Kellogg in 1940. The name Carmen Mountain is derived from the Carmen Mountains in the northern state of Coahuila, where the identifying specimen was collected. It is found from the Chisos Mountains (a extension of the Carmen Mountains) in Big Bend National Park in Texas, southward in all the mountain ranges of north central Coahuila as far as the San Marcos Mountains south of Cuatro Ciénegas.

It is a mountain type subspecie of whitetail deer, in size somewhat smaller than the Texas subspecies, color and markings are typical of the species, with a disproportionately large and flashy tail. The antlers form, generally, a rather compact rack with tines varying in length and mass. At Rancho La Escondida the average weight for the past six years has been 95.6 pounds (field dressed). 82% of the harvested deer have been typical and the rest have been non-typical. Of these, 16% have had from 4 to 7 points, 54% have had 8 points, 15% have had 9 points, 10% have had 10 points and 5% have had more than 10 points.
